Up to the time it was dismantled in 1999, Daewoo was one of South Korea’s largest automakers, second only to the Hyundai Group. As well as a wide range of other products, the corporation included Daewoo Bus and Daewoo Motor divisions.
Daewoo Motor continued operating after 1999, but in 2001, it was sold to General Motors. The company’s commercial vehicle division was sold to Tata Motors.
The company that evolved into Daewoo Motor began in 1937 as National Motor. It changed its name to Saenara Motor in 1962, and under this name became South Korea’s first manufacturer of automobiles.
In 1965, the company was bought by Shinjin Industrial, and began collaborating with Toyota to produce a range of passenger vehicles. In 1972, Toyota withdrew and the company entered a joint venture with General Motors, adopting the name General Motors Korea (GMK) and producing vehicles such as the popular Rekord and Holden Torana based Chevrolet 1700.
In 1982, the company became part of the Daewoo Group and changed its name to Daewoo Motors, although its joint venture with General Motors continued up until 1996.
