    About Daewoo

Up to the time it was dismantled in 1999, Daewoo was one of South Korea’s largest automakers – second only to the Hyundai Group.

The company began in 1937 as National Motor. Over the course of its history, it:

    • collaborated with Toyota to produce a range of passenger vehicles
    • joined with General Motors, adopting the name General Motors Korea (GMK) and producing vehicles such as the popular Rekord and Holden Torana-based Chevrolet 1700
    • became part of the Daewoo Group and changed its name to Daewoo Motors.

In 1999, Daewoo Motors was declared bankrupt. Its assets were sold to General Motors and, in 2004, its commercial vehicle division was sold to Tata Motors.

Today, Daewoo trucks are still marketed in South Africa – and some carefully maintained, older Daewoo car models are still on our roads.
