About Ssang-Yong

The SsangYong Motor Company is South Korea's fourth largest automobile manufacturer. It's known especially for its range of SUVs – including the Korando, Rexton, Kyron, Actyon and Korando – and its Rodius/Stavic minivans.

SsangYong (meaning Double Dragon in Korean) was formed in 1986, when the SsangYong Business Group purchased the Hadonghwan Motor Company, a manufacturer that specialised in producing army jeeps, trucks and buses. In 1987, the group also bought Panther Westwinds, a UK manufacturer of special purpose vehicles.

In 1991, SsangYong partnered with Daimler-Benz, producing an SUV named the Musso. Its later models, including the the second-generation Korando, Rexton and Kyron, also incorporated Mercedes-Benz features, including Mercedes-derived transmissions.

In the 2000s, Chinese automaker SAIC acquired a 51% stake in SsangYong. The years that followed were marked by severely declining sales and strikes, and by 2009, SsangYong was bankrupt.

In 2010, Daewoo Motors bailed SsangYong out, in return for the right to sell its new line of vehicles, including the Rodius minivan and SsangYong's luxury cars, the Chairman W and Chairman H. In the same year, SsangYong was acquired by India's Mahindra & Mahindra Limited.

In 2015, SsangYong launched the Tivoli, the first of its new models under Mahindra & Mahindra ownership.
