What do automotive lash pads do in a car?
Automotive lash pads, lash caps or lash shims are part of the engine’s valve train. They are small, round, precisely sized metal caps fitted to the top of the valve stem.
The components’ main function is to maintain the correct gap (lash) between the camshaft lobe or rocker arm, depending on the configuration of the engine.
A precise lash is critical for optimal engine performance. It allows for the safe expansion of the valve train components as the engine heats up to operating temperature.
Along with setting valve clearance, automotive lash pads protect the tops of the valve stems from premature wear and tear.
How do automotive lash pads work?
The small metal caps, machined to various thicknesses, sit on the valve stem to adjust the gap between the valve tip and the rocker arm or cam follower.
In overhead cam engines, the width of the lash pad is determined by the camshaft base circle diameter. A smaller circle requires a thicker pad to maintain the precise lash required for the valve to completely close.
When the gap is incorrect, and does not match the manufacturer’s clearance specifications, the valves may not close fully.
Malfunctioning valves can lead to loss of engine compression, performance issues and permanent engine damage.
Signs of damaged or worn automotive lash pads
Automotive lash pads are subject to extreme stresses and high temperatures. As the component’s wear down, the lash clearance increases and triggers a range of early-warning signs, such as:
- loud ticking or tapping noises coming from the top of the engine
- difficulty starting the engine, especially when hot
- misfiring, backfiring and rough idling
- a noticeable lack of engine power.
