Masterparts supplies mechanical cam followers for most vehicle makes and models, at branches across South Africa and in Namibia. We also offer convenient delivery.

What do the mechanical cam followers do in a car?

Mechanical cam followers – or tappets – are critical engine components. They convert the camshaft’s spinning motion into the linear up and down movement required to open and close the engine’s valves.

Depending on the design and configuration of the engine, vehicles can have up to 16 mechanical cam followers working in tandem to open and close the intake and exhaust valves.

While motion conversion is a primary function, mechanical cam followers reduce wear between the cam and valve train, and ensure the opening and closing of the valves synchronises with the up and down movement of the pistons.

Mechanical cam followers are manufactured from high-strength alloy, high-carbon chrome and stainless steels, and come in a range of shapes, sizes and designs.

How do mechanical cam followers work?

Cam followers sit directly on the cam lobes, and are designed to follow the lobes’ contour.

As the camshaft rotates, the cam lobe lifts and pushes the cam follower upwards. This upward motion converts the camshaft’s rotational movement into a vertical thrust that opens the valves.

As the cam lobe rotates away from the follower, the valve spring pulls the valve tightly closed.

This regulated movement of the valves controls the precise flow of air and fuel into the cylinders, and  the outflow of exhaust gases.

Signs of failing mechanical cam followers

Worn or damaged mechanical cam followers can impact the efficiency of the engine and performance of the car.

Signs to look out for include difficulty starting the engine, poor fuel delivery, loss of power and a car that misfires or stalls.
