Masterparts offers high-quality Micro-V belts, specifically designed to replace original equipment belts. These drive belts offer superior performance and durability.

What does a Micro-V belt do in a car?

The Micro-V belt is a type of auxiliary drive belt.

It works in conjunction with pulleys, tensioners and idler wheels to power a vehicle’s accessories – the power steering pump, air conditioner compressor, water pump and alternator.

A Micro-V belt performs the same role as the serpentine belt or auxiliary drive belt but features an enhanced design.

It has a shortened, V-shaped multi-ribbed profile. This is more flexible, bends easily around smaller sheaves in confined spaces and transfers power on both sides of the belt.

When used as a replacement for an original equipment part, a Micro-V belt reduces heat, helps improve fuel economy and lowers carbon emissions. It also offers quiet performance.

How does a Micro-V belt work?

A Micro-V belt, which is made from reinforced rubber, is wound around a system of belt tensioners, idler wheels and pulleys, including the main crankshaft pulley.

As the crankshaft rotates, the belt moves and applies friction to the pulleys.

The friction forces the pulleys to rotate and drive the respective components.

Signs of a faulty Micro-V belt

A Micro-V belt operates in extreme conditions. Heat, abrasion and stress can result in imperfections in the rubber, or a frayed or broken belt.

Possible symptoms of belt failure include the following:

  • steering becomes difficult
  • the air conditioner doesn’t work properly
  • the car’s battery may not charge
  • the engine may overheat (due to a malfunctioning water pump)
  • the temperature warning light may go on.

To avoid getting caught with a flat battery or overheated engine, it’s a good idea to visually inspect the belt every so often.

The average replacement interval is every four years, or after every 100,000 to 150,000 kilometres.

Installing a new Micro-V belt is not complicated but requires basic mechanical knowledge.
