What does the steering rack do in a car?

The steering rack is part of a rack and pinion steering system.

It’s a long, thin metal rod that runs parallel to the front axis of the car. When the steering wheel is turned, the rod moves left or right to aim the wheels in the right direction.

In most new model cars, hydraulic fluid is pumped at high pressure to the steering rack. The fluid helps power the steering by making the movement of the wheels quick, smooth and responsive.

How does the steering rack work?

The steering rack works with the pinion gear and tie rods to steer the car.

When the steering wheel is turned, the rotational movement of the wheel is sent to the pinion. The pinion gear converts the rotational movement into linear movement.

The linear movement, which is transferred to the steering rack via the pinion gear, swings the rack left or right.

The rack then pushes the tie rod on one end, and pulls the tie rod on the other, to move both wheels in the desired direction.

In vehicles with power steering, hydraulic fluid and an internal piston in the rack are used to make steering light and easy.

When the wheel is turned, the hydraulic power pushes the piston in the direction of the turn to multiply the force applied to the wheels.

A video by Gary’s Tradition Auto, Rack and Pinion Steering System, shows how the rack works to keep a car on the road.

Signs of a damaged steering rack

The steering rack is built to last. Generally, it lasts the lifetime of the car. However, rough road conditions or an accident can damage the steering assembly components, including the rack.

When the steering is unusually stiff or unresponsive, or there are grinding, thudding or clunking noises from the front end of the car, the steering rack may be cracked or damaged and needs to be replaced.

A smell, similar to that of burning oil, and power steering fluid leaks under the car also indicate a problem with the steering rack.
