About Opel
The Opel story began in 1862, when the first Opel was launched – in the form of a sewing machine.
Within six years founder Adam Opel had branched out into bicycle manufacturing. The first Opel motor vehicles were produced in 1899, following his death.
Between 1929 and 1931 Opel was bought out by American auto manufacturer General Motors (GM). By the mid-1950s, it had emerged as one of the top manufacturers of mid-range cars in Europe.
Opel vehicles have been available in South Africa since 1934. In 1955, the company launched the Opel Rekord in South Africa, revolutionising the small car segment in the country. This was followed by the launch of the iconic Opel Kadett in 1980 and the Astra and Corsa models in the 1990s.
In 2017, General Motors left South Africa. However, Opel remained.
Today Opel is in the process of diversifying its range of models. The Corsa and Astra still rank among the most popular small mid-range cars in the country.
Opel has also introduced several best-in-class SUVs to the South African market, including the Crossland X, Grandland X and Mokka X.
