High-quality camshaft and crankshaft sprockets for sale in South Africa

Camshaft and crankshaft sprockets are essentially gears, linked by a timing chain. Together, they keep the respective shafts operating in synchronicity and the car engine purring along.

Masterparts stocks premium-quality camshaft and crankshaft sprockets at branches in the Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Namibia and also offers overnight door-to-door delivery countrywide. Components are sourced from reputable automotive brands worldwide.

What is a camshaft sprocket?

A camshaft sprocket is a cylindrical engine component, with teeth machined along the outer edge. It’s attached to one end of the camshaft and connected to the crankshaft sprocket by a timing chain or belt.

When the camshaft sprocket rotates, the camshaft revolves and the cam lobes open and close the engine valves.

A functioning camshaft sprocket is required for optimal engine performance. It maintains the proper timing of the flow of air/fuel mixture in, and exhaust gases out, of the combustion chamber.

Camshaft vs. crankshaft: what’s the difference?

The camshaft and crankshaft are located at the top and bottom of the engine, respectively. They execute different functions but must work in synchronicity for a vehicle to run smoothly.

The camshaft opens and closes the intake and exhaust valves. It uses lobes called cams to push against the valves to open them, in time with the motion of the piston. Springs on the valves return them to the closed position.

The crankshaft is coupled with the pistons via connecting rods. It uses the vertical movement of the pistons to rotate and power the engine.

The two shafts are connected via sprockets attached to a timing chain. When one shaft rotates, so does the other.

The rotation of the shafts must be precisely harmonised to regulate proper combustion and ensure the car’s engine runs efficiently.

Symptoms of a worn or faulty camshaft sprocket

Over time, camshaft sprockets incur wear. When that happens, the timing system fails and engine performance is compromised.

Loud knocking noises, a misfiring engine, noticeable vibrations and intermittent stalling may be indications of a worn or faulty camshaft sprocket.

As a rule, sprockets should be replaced whenever the timing chain is replaced.

Why we recommend buying complete timing kits

As the timing system of a car is critical to performance, it’s best practice to replace all the components at the same time – camshaft and crankshaft sprockets, timing chain, and dampers and guide rails.

Masterparts sells complete timing kits compatible with most popular vehicle makes and models.
