What do the propshaft vibration dampers do in a car?
The drivetrain system of a vehicle operates under significant force. As the propshaft transfers engine power to the wheels, it oscillates and vibrates.
The role of the propshaft vibration damper is to control the level of vibration, reduce the noise emanating from the drivetrain, and improve the stability and comfort of the drive.
The type of damper installed in a vehicle depends on the make, model and age of the car.
It can be an external propshaft damper, as featured in the image above, or an internal damper.
External dampers are mounted on the outside of the propshaft. Internal dampers are installed inside the hollow propshaft.
Both components have the same function – to absorb the shocks caused by the rotational movement of the shaft, and release the kinetic energy as heat.

How do propshaft vibration dampers work?
The propshaft vibration damper consists of a weighted housing, known as an inertia ring, and flexible bushing made from durable rubberised material.
When mounted on, or in, the propshaft, the rubberised material absorbs and dissipates the vibrations and noise.
The function of the inertia ring is to resist the changes in rotational speed of the propshaft. The weight and resistance of the ring help neutralise the twisting vibrations and loud hum of the drivetrain components.
Symptoms of failing propshaft vibration dampers
Propshaft vibration dampers are designed to last. However, premature aging of the rubberised material, and exposure to harsh environmental conditions, can cause cracks and corrosion.
When there is visible damage to the damper, strong vibrations felt inside the car, or loud clunking or rattling noises underneath the car, especially when accelerating or going over bumps in the road, it’s time to install a replacement component.
