Masterparts offers propshaft couplings for sale, at branches across South Africa and in Namibia.
What do the propshaft couplings do in a car?
Propshaft couplings are mechanical components connecting the vehicle’s transmission to the driveshaft.
The coupling’s key role is reducing impact and vibration, while transmitting rotational power between two inaccurately aligned shafts.
How do propshaft couplings work?
A typical propshaft coupling is manufactured from cast iron or carbon steel. It consists of a flange, rubber or polyurethan bushing, and coupling bolts.
The two shafts – the gearbox output shaft and propshaft – are inserted into each end of the coupling, and fastened together by the coupling bolts.

The natural flexibility of the bushing material allows for the lateral and angular misalignments of the shafts, thereby reducing wear on the centre bearing and the impact, noise and vibration of the car’s transmission system.
Symptoms of failing propshaft couplings
Propshaft couplings usually have a long life span.
However, the constant flexing, coupled with stresses of torque transmission, can lead to material damage. A common problem is the formation of cracks in the rubber bushing.
As the coupling wears, it loses its flexibility and can no longer absorb shocks and vibrations.
Loud clunking noises that increase in intensity as the car accelerates, and a shifting feeling when changing gears, are often indications of a damaged or failing propshaft coupling.
