What do the propshaft centre bearings do in a car?
The propshaft centre bearing supports the weight and rotation of the propshaft.
It’s mounted to the vehicle frame, and keeps the shaft properly aligned as it spins. Without a centre bearing, the shaft would bend or flex as it transmits power from the transmission to the wheels.
In vehicles with two-piece propshafts, the centre bearing holds the sections together.
Besides its role as a shaft support, the propshaft centre bearing:
- dampens the noise and vibrations from the transmission
- reduces bending stress
- keeps the shaft aligned with the gearbox and differential, and
- prevents premature wear of drivetrain components.

How do propshaft centre bearings work?
The propshaft centre bearing is typically a roller or ball bearing. It fits into a metal cage encased by a large rubber housing to absorb shocks and vibrations.
The propshaft passes through the centre bearing, which is press-fitted onto the shaft using a specialised tool or hydraulic press.
The complete component is bolted onto the car’s chassis to support the propshaft, and enable its smooth rotation.
Symptoms of worn propshaft centre bearings
As with all vehicle components, propshaft centre bearings fail over time. A worn or damaged rubber mounting is often the cause of the failure.
Signs that a replacement part may be required include strong vibrations inside the car, especially when accelerating or travelling at high speeds, and loud humming or thumping noises coming from beneath the car.
