What does the gearbox mounting do in a car?
The gearbox mounting in a car plays three critical roles.
It secures the gearbox to the vehicle chassis, reduces the noise and vibrations from the engine, and maintains optimal alignment between the gearbox and driveshaft.
Gearbox mountings are classified according to mounting support, shock absorption material, and/or orientation.
Standard gearbox mountings are metal foot-mounts or C-Face and D-Flange brackets, with rubber or polyurethane bushings to dampen noise and vibrations.
More advanced mounts, such as active and hydraulic gearbox mountings, use electromagnetics and fluids to counteract engine vibrations.
How do gearbox mountings work?
The gearbox mounting is either bolted or welded to the frame of the car.
Depending on the type of mounting, a solid rubber or polyurethane bushing, fluid-filled cushion, electromagnets or vacuum sits between the bracket and transmission to absorb the noise and vibrations of the driveshaft and engine.
Signs of damaged gearbox mountings
Worn or damaged gearbox mountings are identified by clunking, knocking or banging sounds coming from the engine, especially when changing gears, accelerating and decelerating.
