What does the clutch master cylinder do in a car?
The clutch master cylinder is part of the vehicle’s clutch system.
It’s a type of hydraulic pump that transfers pressure from the clutch pedal to the clutch slave cylinder via a fluid-filled connecting hose.
When either of the cylinders fail, there is insufficient pressure to disengage the clutch from the transmission to enable a smooth gear change.

How do clutch master cylinders work?
A typical clutch master cylinder is a sealed unit with a dedicated fluid reservoir. It is located directly behind the clutch pedal, and connected to it by a pushrod and mechanical lever system.
The cylinder consists of an aluminium or plastic housing. Inside the housing is a sealed chamber containing a piston, spring and outlet hose.
When the clutch pedal is depressed, the pushrod drives the piston forward, and the pressurised fluid is forced through the connecting hose to the master slave cylinder.
On release of the pedal, the spring inside the chamber pushes the piston back up.
Signs of a failing clutch master cylinder
As the clutch master cylinder is continually in use, it can leak and fail. When that happens, the pressure required for easy gear shifts is compromised.
Symptoms of a worn clutch master cylinder include a spongy or loose clutch pedal, difficulty changing gears, and brake fluid that is low in level or dark in colour.
When the clutch pedal is engaged but does not return to its original position, it’s a sign the clutch master cylinder has failed and needs to be replaced.
