What does the clutch slave cylinder do in a car?

The clutch slave cylinder is a critical component in a vehicle’s manual transmission system. Its only function is to release the pressure plates from the flywheel to allow the driver to change gears.

Depending on the make and model of car, the part can be located inside or outside the transmission. A hose links one side of the clutch slave cylinder to the clutch master cylinder. The other side is attached to the clutch fork.

The hydraulically powered component can be made from a range of materials including cast iron, aluminium, glass fibre-reinforced polyamide and plastic. The cylinder consists of a central chamber housing a spring, piston and hydraulic fluid.

How do clutch slave cylinders work?

The clutch slave cylinder works with the clutch master cylinder to enable smooth gear shifts.

When the clutch pedal is depressed, fluid flows from the master cylinder along the connecting hose and into the clutch slave cylinder via an inlet and outlet valve.

The hydraulic pressure of the fluid forces the piston against the clutch-release bearing to disengage the pressure plates from the engine’s flywheel.

Once the clutch pedal is released, the fluid flows back to the oil reservoir via the connecting hose and clutch master cylinder. The piston returns to its original position, and the clutch pressure plates and clutch cover re-engage with the engine.

Signs of a faulty clutch slave cylinder

With time, the clutch slave cylinder can wear and fail. That can cause any number of issues, from fluid leaks and problems changing gears to complete clutch failure.

Signs to look out for include low fluid levels, a strong burning smell when attempting to shift gears and changes to the height and feel of the clutch pedal.
