What does an EGR valve do in a car?

An EGR valve is the primary component in a car’s exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system. It controls the amount of exhaust gases reintroduced into the combustion chamber via the intake manifold.

The key purpose of the EGR valve, and the system at large, is to reduce exhaust emissions. This is achieved by diluting the air-fuel mixture with recirculated exhaust gas, and lowering the temperature of combustion.

Reducing the temperature in the combustion chamber results in a more complete burn. This, in turn, inhibits the production of nitrogen oxides.

Depending on the age of a vehicle, the EGR valve can be one of two designs – pneumatic or electrical.

Pneumatic or vacuum EGR valves are typically installed in older model cars. In this type of component, the valve is opened and closed by a pneumatic drive or vacuum cell.

Modern vehicles are fitted with electrically operated valves. Sensors, integrated into the design, relay signals to the engine control unit (ECU) to enable precise control of the valve position.

How does an EGR valve work?

An EGR valve has two basic settings – open or closed.

At engine startup, the valve is in a closed position. As the vehicle’s speed increases and the engine heats up, the valve gradually opens until it reaches its full extent at optimal operating temperature.

Once the car slows down and stops, the valve closes and prevents the flow of exhaust gases. The valve adjustment occurs continuously throughout the journey.

Signs of a malfunctioning EGR valve

Oil, dirt and debris can clog up an EGR valve, rendering it inoperable. When that happens, the entire system fails.

Engine performance is typically compromised, there’s a noticeable increase in emissions and fuel efficiency is reduced. The engine may stall frequently or idle roughly.

An illuminated check engine light and a strong smell of petrol inside the vehicle are also potential signs of a faulty EGR valve.
