Engine Bearings

Masterparts stocks quality engine bearings designed to support the movement of crankshafts, camshafts and connecting rods.

What do engine bearings do in car?

All rotating components in a car’s engine are fitted with engine bearings. Their main role is to reduce friction between moving parts.

Different types of engine bearings fulfil different roles.

The main crankshaft bearings are mounted in the crankcase. They support the rotation of the crankshaft.

Connecting rod bearings maintain the movement of the crank pins within the connecting rods.

Camshaft bearings support the rotation of the camshaft, enabling the activation of the push rods and rocker arms to open and close the valves.

How does an engine bearing work?

An engine bearing consists of flat cylinders, each of which consists of two halves, known as shells. The half shell design allows for a layer of oil to form on the surface of the bearing.

This lubricated surface helps dissipate heat, and protects the engine housing and rotating shaft from excessive wear.

Signs of a faulty engine bearing

Engine bearings are subjected to extreme operating conditions. Over time, they may become worn and eventually fail.

Bearings can fail due to:

  • insufficient lubrication, resulting in too much friction between moving parts
  • contaminants in oil, with small particles causing scratching and damage through friction
  • too much pressure (or “bearing crush”) between the bearing and its housing bore.

Loud knocking sounds from the engine are a common sign of worn or faulty rod bearings. The sounds may be caused by direct contact between the connecting rods and the crankshaft.

Similarly, unusual noises from the transmission may indicate that the main bearings need to be replaced.

Low oil pressure caused by leaks between the bearings and silver particles on the dipstick are other common symptoms of worn engine bearings.

If engine bearings become excessively worn and aren’t replaced, friction between moving parts can lead to serious engine damage.
