What does the fuel filter do in a car?
The fuel filter is part of the vehicle’s fuel injection system. It removes dust, dirt, water, rust and other contaminants present in the fuel before it enters the fuel pump and is distributed to the engine.
The location of the fuel filter depends on the car’s make and model.
In older model cars, the fuel filter is housed in a cylindrical metal container connected to the main fuel line. Later model fuel-injected vehicles usually have a filter that’s built into the fuel tank or fuel pump assemblies.
By delivering a constant flow of clean diesel or petrol to the engine, the fuel filter is instrumental in providing a smooth, trouble-free ride.
How does a fuel filter work?
Fuel is pumped at high pressure into the fuel filter’s metal casing via the inlet pipe. The pressure forces the fuel through the permeable paper or polyester filter.
The porous filtration medium traps particles of 20 to 30 microns and larger without disturbing fuel flow.
Clean, decontaminated fuel flows out of the filter outlet into the fuel pump and to the engine.
In diesel and petrol-powered cars, fuel filters should be replaced every 30,000 km and 50,000 km, respectively.
Signs of a faulty fuel filter
A defective or clogged fuel filter can have dire consequences. Particles and contaminants passing through the filter can block the fuel injectors, disturb fuel supply and cause damage to the engine.
Here are indications of a faulty fuel filter:
- difficulty starting the car
- an engine that surges, sputters, stalls or repeatedly misfires
- increased fuel consumption
- an illuminated engine warning light
- poor overall engine performance.
