What do oil pump gears do in a car?
Oil pump gears are fitted inside the vehicle’s oil pump.
The gears’ function is to draw in oil from the sump and convey it to the pump’s discharge, where it is transported under pressure through the engine’s lubrication system
There are two main types of oil pump gears – external gears and internal gears.
External oil pump gears are identical in size. One is driven by the crankshaft. As the gears interlock, it drives the other gear.

Internal oil pump gears are two interlocking gears of different size – a large internal rotor gear and a smaller external idler gear. The idler gear is mounted inside the rotor gear.

How do oil pump gears work?
The rotating action of the gears transfers oil from the pump’s inlet to the discharge.
As the gears unlock at the inlet side of the pump, a vacuum is created and the oil is sucked into the pump.
The oil is trapped by the gear teeth and transported by the rotating gears to the discharge, where it is forced out of the pump under pressure.
Signs of a damaged oil pump gear
When oil pump gears are damaged or worn, the lubrication system of the car is compromised. This can cause the engine to seize.
Diagnosing oil pump failure before it does permanent damage to the engine is key.
Indications to look out for include:
- a major decline in oil pressure
- whining or whirring noises from the oil pump
- an overheated engine
- ticking or grinding sounds emanating from the valve train.
