What does the oil pressure switch do in a car?
The oil pressure switch is an electrical sensor mounted close to the oil filter on the engine block of the car.
It monitors the oil pressure in the engine. It is linked to the car’s electronic control unit (ECU) or directly to the oil pressure light on the dashboard.
The switch’s main function is to alert the driver when the oil pressure falls outside the normal range.
How does an oil pressure switch work?
The oil pressure switch is a small mechanical device containing a spring-loaded switch.
When the car’s ignition is turned on but the engine has not started, there is no oil pressure.
In this state, the electrical contacts inside the switch are closed, and the warning light on the dashboard is illuminated.
When the engine starts, the oil pump builds pressure until the correct level is reached.
At that point, the pressure activates the spring, which opens the contacts and interrupts the power supply to the oil pressure light.
Signs of a faulty oil pressure switch
A faulty oil pressure switch may be either on or off all the time, or may flicker continuously.
A bad oil pressure switch often leaks oil. So you may see oil on the ground where you regularly park, and in the engine compartment.
A malfunctioning oil pressure indicator may also point to a defective oil pressure switch.
