What are automotive sleeve kits?
A sleeve kit consists of a set of primary combustion engine components – cylinder sleeves, pistons and rings.
When an engine’s cylinders require repairs or restoration, the replacement parts are readily available in kit form.
How do the sleeve kit components work?
Sleeve kit components have different functions in a vehicle’s engine.
- Cylinder sleeves fit into the cylinder’s original or rebored casing. They restore the cylinders to the same specifications as when they were newly machined.
- Pistons move up and down in the cylinders. They’re integral to the intake, compression, combustion and exhaust cycles of the engine, and transfer power to the crankshaft.
- Piston rings are fitted to the piston. They seal the combustion chamber, transfer heat to the cylinder liner and remove oil from the cylinder walls.
When a sleeve kit is required: signs of a damaged cylinder
The cylinders of an engine are subject to extreme heat, wear and stress. Over time, they can become worn and damaged.
Typical signs of cylinder issues include:
- misfiring of the engine
- higher than usual oil consumption
- poor engine performance.
