Masterparts offers small end bushes from leading automotive parts manufacturers.

What do small end bushes do in a car?

Small end bushes are alloy bearings. They are fitted at the small ends of the connecting rods.

Their primary purpose is to prevent metal-on-metal contact.

In structure, they are like metal rods with holes at either end. Piston pins pass through the bushes to join the conrods to the pistons.

The diagram below shows the typical design of an automobile connecting rod, including the position of the small end.

Why do small end bushes need replacement?

Heat, age and frequent movement can lead to the deterioration of the bushes, resulting in engine noise and vibrations.

The surface of bushes may also be damaged during disassembly. Manufacturers typically heat the rods in an oven and the expanded pin hole contracts on cooling to grip the piston pin tightly. If the pin is then forced out when cold, it can damage the small-end bore.
