What do ball joints do in a car?

Ball joints are part of a car’s front suspension. They connect the wheel hubs and steering knuckles to the control arms.

The main function of the ball joints is to enable the front wheels to move up and down independently of each other, thereby providing a safe and comfortable ride on all road surfaces.

The small spherical components are also instrumental in turning both the wheels left or right as you steer the vehicle.

How do ball joints work?

Ball joints have a typical ball-and-socket design. Each component consists of a metal housing, a rotating stud fitted within the housing and a lubricated socket.

When the car is moving, the ball stud is constantly rotating to provide a pivoting movement. This allows the wheels to move up and down in different directions while remaining safely attached to the car.

Most front suspension vehicles have two ball joints: one connecting the lower control arm to the wheel; the other linking the steering knuckles to the upper control arm.

Rear-drive cars can have ball joints on the rear suspension to assist the steering and suspension systems.

Signs of damaged ball joints

Depending on road conditions and driving habits, ball joints have an average life span of around 1,000 kilometres. Over time, the ball and socket can wear, lose lubrication and seize.

The early diagnosis of a damaged or worn ball joint can prevent the loss of control of the vehicle.

Indications to look out for include clunking noises from the side of the car, a strong vibration that can be felt through the steering wheel or brake pedal, and a feeling of drifting when turning.

Excessive wear on the inner or outer edges of the tyres is a sure sign of a failing ball joint.
