What do the control arm bushes do in a car?
Control arm bushes are flexible rubber or polyurethane components fitted between the control arms and the vehicle’s chassis.
For relatively small parts, control arm bushings play a major role in vehicle comfort and safely.
They provide a cushion against uneven road conditions, reduce vibrations and noises from the suspension, and prevent metal-on-metal wear and tear.
Depending on the type of vehicle, there can be one or more control arms, each housing an upper and lower control arm bush.

How do control arm bushes work?
Control arm bushes act as a rubberised barrier between the metal of the control arm and the vehicle’s frame.
The flexibility of the elasticised material allows the wheels to move freely up and down, and align from left to right in response to changes in the steering.
See How to Check a Bushing for a better idea of what control arm bushes look like, where they fit on the vehicle’s suspension and how they help keep a vehicle safely on the road.
Signs of a damaged or defective control arm bush
Control arm bushes are subject to extreme stress and changes in temperature. Over time the rubber can soften, wear or break.
A worn or damaged control arm bush can compromise the vehicle’s steering and braking performance. The car typically leans excessively in the turn causing uneven wear of the tyres.
Braking is erratic, the steering is less responsive and every bump or corrugation in the road is felt inside the car.
Clunking noises from underneath the car, and vibrations on the wheel, are indications one or more control arm bushes are faulty and need to be replaced.
