What do control arms do in a car?
Control arms are part of the vehicle’s suspension system. They are the link between the wheel assembly and the chassis.
The components’ main role is to keep the wheels in contact with the road at all times.
Depending on the car’s make and model, it may have one control arm, upper and lower control arms or a multi-link system.
The majority of control arms have an A-type design.
The top of the A is connected to the wheel hub assembly via a ball joint. The ‘legs’ of the A are attached to the vehicle’s frame by rubber pivot points called bushings.
In modern vehicles, the ball joint is typically integrated into the design of the control arm.

How does a control arm work?
The control arm bushings and ball joint are key to the component’s functionality.
The bushings allow the control arm to move up and down with the car’s wheels. In so doing, it keeps the tyres firmly on the road surface – even when in bumpy or uneven conditions.
The ball joint provides a pivoting motion between the control arm and the steering knuckle, allowing the wheels to turn left or right and move up and down.
A large coil spring, housed between the control arms and the frame, together with the control arms themselves, helps provide a smooth, comfortable and controlled ride.
You can get a better idea of how the control arms work in the YouTube video, Understanding Control Arms, by the Counterman Education Centre.
Signs of a faulty control arm
When the ball joint or bushings fail, the control arm can no longer perform its function.
Common symptoms of a malfunctioning control arm vary from loose or unstable steering to popping sounds when accelerating or decelerating or driving on an irregular surface.
A strong and consistent vibration felt in the car, along with unevenly worn tyres, are also typically indications that a new control arm installation is required.
