Masterparts offers crankshaft position sensors from trusted automotive equipment manufacturers.

What does the crankshaft position sensor do in a car?

The crankshaft position sensor measures the position and rotational speed of the crankshaft. It’s integral to the functioning of the distribution and ignition timing in the engine.

Engine management systems use the signal from the sensor to determine when to fire the spark plugs and synchronise the delivery of fuel to the engine.

If no signal is delivered by the sensor, the engine won’t start.

How does a crankshaft position sensor work?

The sensor works in tandem with the reluctor ring, a toothed ring attached to the crankshaft.

As the crankshaft rotates, the sensor reads the notches on the ring and produces a signal to indicate the precise positioning of the shaft.

Depending on the make of a vehicle, the crankshaft position sensor is typically located on the transmission bell housing or near the harmonic balancer at the front end of the crankshaft.

Signs of a faulty crankshaft position sensor

Over time, crankshaft position sensors can fail. This may cause a vehicle’s engine to stall, fail to start or misfire.

Other signs of a faulty crankshaft position sensor can include:

  • a noticeable reduction in fuel efficiency
  • erratic readings from the RPM gauge
  • an illuminated “check engine” light.

A failing sensor may also prevent fuel-saving devices, such as cylinder deactivation systems and variable valve timing, from working.

How to replace a crankshaft position sensor

Diagnosing and replacing a crankshaft position sensor are tasks usually left to an experienced mechanic. The sensor lies in a sensitive part of the engine.
