What does the cylinder head do in car?
The cylinder head is the top part of a car’s engine.
It is mounted on the engine block, and attached to the crankshaft housing by cylinder head bolts.
The main functions of the cylinder head are to:
- seal off the combustion chamber
- disperse heat from the combustion process
- facilitate continuous lubrication of the cylinders.

How does a cylinder head work?
The cylinder head acts as the mechanical hub of the engine, controlling ignition, fuel injection and the exchange of gases.
A number of engine components are either mounted on, or located inside, the cylinder head.
They include the intake manifold, fuel injectors, oil and coolant ducts, camshafts, inlet and outlet valves and spark plugs.
Together, these components enable the smooth operation of the engine.
Signs of a cracked or damaged cylinder head
A cylinder head is subject to the extreme temperatures and high levels of force created by the combustion process. This makes it susceptible to damage.
Common defects include a leaking or blown head gasket or a cracked cylinder head. Either of these issues will interfere with the functioning and performance of the engine.
The most telling signs of a cracked or damaged cylinder head are:
- difficulties starting the engine
- a marked reduction in power
- low coolant and oil levels
- an exhaust belching steam or white smoke
- oil or combustion gases in the coolant
- a rough, misfiring engine.
Symptoms like these require the immediate attention of an experienced automotive technician.
