What does the mechanical fuel pump do in a car?

Mechanical fuel pumps are found in older model cars. They convey fuel from the fuel tank to the carburettor.

Unlike an electric fuel pump, which is powered by an electric motor connected to the vehicle’s electrical system, a mechanical fuel pump is driven by the camshaft.

This type of fuel pump is mounted on the side of the engine. It uses a simple suction process to draw the fuel from the tank and into the chamber.

How does a mechanical fuel pump work?

As the camshaft rotates, a cam or lobe at the end of the shaft pushes against a spring-loaded lever located on the outside of the fuel pump’s casing.

The ensuing force drives the lever up on the one end and down on the other.

The end of the lever inside the casing is linked to a diaphragm. When it goes down, it pulls the diaphragm down with it.

The downward motion creates the suction required to draw the fuel from the tank, along the fuel pipe and into the chamber via the inlet valve.

When the cam rotates further, it releases the pressure on the lever. The return spring moves the lever back to its original position, and the diaphragm relaxes.

The return spring then pushes the diaphragm up to force the fuel through the exit valve and on to the carburettor.

Signs of a dysfunctional mechanical fuel pump

When the mechanical fuel pump isn’t functioning as it should, the engine is starved of fuel. The car won’t start easily, and when it does, the engine stalls, sputters and surges.

A noticeable loss of power, lower fuel efficiency and unusual noises from the fuel tank are possible indications of a failing fuel pump.
