What does the electric fuel pump do in a car?

The electric fuel pump is part of a modern, fuel-injected vehicle’s fuel supply system. It conveys fuel from the tank to the fuel injectors, in the right quantities and at the required pressure.

Typically, the cylindrical pump is mounted inside the fuel tank. It consists of several components that work together to control the flow of fuel from the tank to the intake manifold or combustion chamber.

How does an electric fuel pump work?

A solenoid within the pump activates an electric motor that moves an iron rod inside the casing up and down. The movement of the rod relaxes or tightens the diaphragm.

When the diaphragm moves in a downwards direction, a low pressure area is created, which draws fuel from the fuel tank into the chamber via the inlet valve.

When sufficient fuel has entered the chamber, the rod moves down to create contacts that cut power to the motor. The diaphragm relaxes, pushing fuel out through the exit valve to the engine via the fuel filter.

Signs of a defective electric fuel pump

With time and continuous use, an electric fuel pump can overheat and fail. When that happens, the engine is difficult to start, stalls and splutters, and loses power.

Loud whining noises from the fuel tank and an illuminated check engine light are signs of an electric fuel pulp that has seen better days.
