Radiator hoses carry coolant to and from the engine. They’re made from flexible rubber, sometimes with the addition of highly heat-resistant polyester materials.
Radiator hoses vary in size, depending on the type of engine you have.
Over time, radiator hoses tend to soften, crack or swell.
What does a radiator hose do?
There are two types of radiator hoses – upper and lower.
The upper radiator hose is a pressure hose that connects the engine to the radiator.
The lower radiator hose, which is attached to the bottom of the radiator and the water pump, serves as a suction hose.
Together, the hoses circulate coolant between the engine, the radiator and the water pump. They’re essential for maintaining the optimal operating temperature of a vehicle’s engine.
Signs of a faulty or damaged radiator hose
Obvious signs of a faulty or damaged radiator hose include coolant leaks, an overheating engine and consistently low levels of coolant in the radiator or the reservoir.
If a radiator hose is cracked, swollen or soft to the touch, it should be replaced. Otherwise, it may compromise the vehicle’s cooling system.
How to replace a radiator hose
Installing a new radiator hose is a simple process that doesn’t require advanced mechanical skills. The only tools you need are a screwdriver, pliers and an eight-litre capacity drain pan.
