The radiator is the primary cooling component in an automobile.
It removes heat from the engine block and prevents the vehicle from overheating.
How does a radiator work?
The radiator is a large metal tank located in front of the engine block. It regulates the temperature of the car by passing coolant through the engine and back to the radiator.
Heat absorbed by the coolant is expelled via thin metal fins on the front of the radiator. Cool air from the outside flows through the vehicle’s grille and into the radiator to enhance the cooling process.
When the vehicle is idle, sensors in the fan clutch activate the radiator fan. Air is blown from the fan onto the radiator to reduce the temperature of the heated coolant and direct hot air out of the vehicle.
Symptoms of a faulty or damaged radiator
Radiator failure can be caused by a faulty radiator cap, mechanical issues with the fan or fan clutch and/or leaking hoses.
Signs to look out for include unusual fluctuations in the temperature gauge in the car, smoke rising from beneath the bonnet and rust on the radiator.
If green liquid collects beneath the car, it’s a clear indication of a problem with the cooling system.
How to replace a radiator
Replacing a car’s radiator is a complex and time-consuming job.
Depending on the make and model of the vehicle, it can involve detaching the radiator hoses, removing electrical wiring and disconnecting the air conditioner condenser before unbolting and replacing the radiator itself.
A number of YouTube videos and how-to guides illustrate how to replace a radiator. Examples include:
