What do timing chain tensioners do in a car?

The timing chain tensioner is a critical component in a vehicle’s timing chain system.

It exerts pressure on the chain, reduces slack and prevents it from slipping off the camshaft and crankshaft sprockets while the engine is running.

By maintaining the correct tautness, the tensioner also reduces the rattles and vibrations caused by the chain as it winds through the engine.

Timing chain tensioners can be mechanically or hydraulically operated.

Mechanical timing chain tensioners are typically rounded or linear in design. These types of automotive parts apply tension through a spring-loaded shoe.

Most modern vehicles are fitted with hydraulic timing chain tensioners. They’re precision components that use oil pressure to maintain optimal tension.

How do timing chain tensioners work?

A mechanical timing chain tensioner uses a spring-loaded slider, guide or shoe to apply consistent pressure to the chain.

During installation, the retaining pin is removed, and the tension is manually adjusted to absorb any extra slack on the chain.

Tension must be physically re-adjusted to compensate for any stretch or wear of the chain. Alternatively, the tensioner must be swapped out for a replacement part.

In a hydraulically operated timing chain tensioner, oil from the engine controls the movement of the piston as it dynamically applies pressure to the chain guide.

When the engine is running, the oil pressure builds up and forces the oil into the cylinder through a regulating valve.

The pressurised oil then pushes the piston rod outwards onto the guide, which, in turn, applies the correct tension to the chain.

Signs of worn timing chain tensioners

When the timing chain tensioner, or any of the other timing components, malfunctions or fails, the entire timing system of the engine is out. This can cause the engine to fail and result in costly repairs.

The most common signs of a worn or damaged timing chain tensioner include difficulty starting the engine, loss of power and performance, rattling noises and a slack or misaligned timing chain.
