What does the timing chain and oil pump chain do in a car?
The timing chain is part of the engine’s timing system. It links the crankshaft with the camshaft, and synchronises the rotation of the two shafts.
The rotational movement of the timing chain around the crankshaft and camshaft gears regulates the opening and closing of the intake and exhaust valves.
The precise timing of the valves is required to allow the right amount of fuel to enter the engine, and exhaust to leave the engine.
The oil pump chain connects the oil pump gear to the crankshaft. It drives the oil pump and ensures oil is circulated through the engine.
Depending on the make and model of vehicle, oil pumps can be driven by the crankshaft or camshaft, or an external oil pump chain.

How do timing chains and oil pump chains work?
Both timing and oil pump chains are installed around gears or sprockets.
The up and down movement of the pistons turns the crankshaft. As the timing chain is is fitted onto the teeth of the crankshaft gear, it forces the chain to move along its path connecting the crankshaft and camshaft, thereby synchronising the rotation of both the shafts.
The oil pump chain works in a similar manner but connects the crankshaft or camshaft with the oil pump gears, which in turn drive the oil pump.
Signs of worn or damaged timing chains and oil pump chains
Worn timing chains and oil pump chains tend to stretch and slip off the gears.
When that happens, the regulated movement of the valves, and/or distribution of oil throughout the engine, is compromised. The engine won’t start properly, misfires and delivers a poor performance overall.
Typical warning signs of a problem timing chain or oil pump chain include rattling sounds from the engine, low oil pressure, vibrations when the car is idling and an illuminated check engine light.
When one or other chain fails, it is best practice to replace both parts at the same time.
