Masterparts offers high-quality water temperature sensors suitable for most vehicle makes and models.

Our automotive parts, including sensors, are available for delivery or at our retail stores in South Africa and Namibia.

What does a water temperature sensor do in a car?

The water temperature sensor is central to the smooth running of the vehicle’s engine.

It continually monitors the temperature in the cooling system and sends data to the Electronic Control Unit (ECU).

The ECU uses the data to adjust the fuel injection and ignition timing to deliver optimal engine performance.

The temperature recorded by the sensor also determines when the radiator fan is switched on and off.

How do water temperatures sensors work?

Depending on the vehicle’s make and model, the water temperature sensor is installed on the radiator or close to the thermostat housing.

The tip of the sensor is immersed in the coolant and connected to the ECU.

A typical water temperature sensor is a Negative Temperature Coefficient (NTC) thermistor. Its electrical resistance decreases with increasing temperature.

By transmitting a standardised voltage to the sensor, and monitoring its resistance, the ECU can get an accurate reading of the current temperature in the coolant.

When the temperature is outside the accepted range of 88 to 90°C , or there is no signal from the sensor, the on-board computer activates the check engine light.

A video by Tech MTE provides a clear picture of how a sensor works.

Signs of a faulty or dysfunctional water temperature sensor

Over time and with extended use, water temperature sensors can malfunction and fail. Parts can even develop cracks caused by corrosion and the continuous voltage cycle.

Typical signs of a defective water temperature sensor include an overheating engine, rising fuel consumption, rough idling, and poor engine performance.

The current temperature of the vehicle’s engine is displayed on the dashboard via the sensor and ECU.

A reading of more than 90°C when the engine is warm is considered irregular and may indicate a problem with the sensor.
