What does the drag link do in a car?
The drag link is part of a vehicle’s steering linkage system.
It’s a long steel shaft with ball joints fitted on each end. The function of the drag link is to help convey left and right motion directives from the steering wheel to the wheels.
Drag links are key components in the steering systems of heavier vehicles – SUVs, trucks and buses.
Most sedans and crossovers have rack and pinion set-ups. This type of steering system has a rack, rather than a drag link.
Centre links, connecting links and relay rods are alternative names for drag links.

How does a drag link work?
Depending on the application, the drag link can be connected to the pitman arm of the steering column or the tie rod assembly.
When the steering wheel is turned left or right, the pitman arm pulls the drag link in the desired direction.
The mechanical motion is transferred to the wheels via the tie rods and steering knuckles, enabling the vehicle to turn.
See the *PRO-TIP* video Tie Rod & Drag Link Explained for a clear picture of what the components look like, and how they interact to steer the car.
Signs of a faulty drag link
Drag links are heavy-duty components that seldom fail.
If, for whatever reason, there is a problem, symptoms include:
- excessive vibrations
- uneven wear on the tyres
- poor or unresponsive steering
- misaligned wheels
- faint clunking noises when the steering wheel is turned.
