What does an idler arm do in a car?
The idler arm is an integral part of a vehicle’s steering system.
Its main function is to support the pivotal movement of the drag link as it moves from side to side, turning the wheels left or right in the process.
Together with the Pitman arm, the idler arm facilitates a smooth, responsive and controlled steering motion.
The component consists of a pivot rod and ball and socket. It is bolted to the vehicle frame on one end and attached to the drag link, or steering link, on the other.

How does the idler arm work?
When the steering wheel is turned, the rotational force is transferred to the Pitman arm via the steering gear. The Pitman arm moves the drag link either left or right, causing the front wheels to turn.
The idler arm holds the opposite end of the drag link in perfect alignment, and allows it to pivot evenly as the wheels turn.

Signs of a damaged idler arm
Idler arms are subject to wear, especially when road conditions and driving habits aren’t ideal and routine maintenance is overlooked.
